Pond life

The first part of this pond refurbish was to remove the old ponds inhabitants. It was decided that to ensure we save as much life as possible we would set up a temporary pond for the duration of the time it takes to re-build the pond and mature it and put everything from the old pond into it.

These ponds had been in situe for a considerable number of years and even though the liner had slumped and the level was relatively low it was still teeming with life, over 50 baby newts a number of frogs and countless small aquatic animals were all put into temporary storage.

The pond water was removed and put through a fine mesh to catch the last few animals before we set to remove the old liner.

Liner Removal and pond side construction

The connecting pathway had it slabs removed and what was left of the edging stones were removed and cleaned, the first layer of slabs from the patio area were also removed so that we could get to the pond liner and remove it.

The next job was to build a stable side to the pond to hold back the earth. One of the main issues with the previous pond was that the sides had started to slip down making it very unstable and causing the edging stones holding the liner in place to slip too so it was important to have a solid edge to the pond to not only keep the shape but to allow an edging stone to be laid flat on top of the liner. Both the large and small pond was given a new edge and the cement was left to dry.
