Sometimes getting fish for your pond can be a bit more difficult than expected, with so many types to choose from which will really suit my pond? At maltby aquatics we offer free advice to help you choose the right fish for your pond. Most aquatic shops will NOT take back unwanted pond fish due to risk of disease contamination to their current stocks so it is really important to get it right first time.

When deciding on what fish to buy for your pond you should consider the following,

  • How big does this fish grow?
  • Will this fish mix with the current fish i have?
  • What food does this fish eat? Does it require special diets, such as sinking or floating pellet?
  • Does this fish have any special requirements such as temperamental to changes in water quality or temperature?

For example Koi carp require specialist ponds with large filters, some species such as Orf require very large well oxygenated ponds or their growth becomes stunted causing deformed tails. Tench require a special sinking diet as they will only feed from the bottom of the pond. At maltby aquatics we tailor the fish to suit your pond and can offer a fish collection and acclimatization service.

A recent customer is St.Albans Hertfordshire used maltby aquatics pond fish service. After discussing suitable fish they were collected and acclimatised gradually in the customers pond, we always acclimitise fish for around 30 minutes to ensure minimal temperature and pH shock giving the fish a much better start in their new home. This service incurs a small service charge to collect the fish. At maltby aquatics we source our pond fish from a local high quality supplier based in Hertfordshire.
