Its time to stop feeding your fish if you haven’t already. Common pond fish do not need feeding when temperatures drop below 10 degrees, this is due to the fact that they don’t move much so therefore are not using much energy, they are unable to break down the proteins and fats in the food when in this dormant state, health problems and premature death will result if fed throughout dormant periods, food will ‘rot’ in their stomach. Special Autumn/ early Winter foods such as wheatgerm can be fed when temperatures are no lower than 13 degrees, however if  the fish are not active at these temperatures they will not feed and the left over food must be removed.

It is important to remember fish build up their fat reserves during the warmer months of the year and must be fed 2-3 times daily on a balanced diet, Maltby Aquatics recommends Nisikoi pellet foods, staple, protein and wheatgerm.
