Pond equipment installation

While the pond was filling the filtration was installed. The filtration that was chosen for this pond is as follows.

Pond Filter

Oase Biotec Screenmatic 12. This large gravity filter uses sponges to break down organics in the pond along with zeolite cartridges. The filtration has a unique screening device which periodically rotates and pushes any large waste particles such as pond sludge, leaves and algae into a collection tray using the screening mechanism. This filter was installed away from the pond hidden in the rockery area but easily accessible to allow for routine maintenance.

Pond Filter Ultra Violet clarifier (UVC)

It is important to run a UVC on ponds to stop build up of nuisance green water and excess algaes. A large standalone system was installed to create the power needed to control the algae in this large pond. The unit used was a TMC 55w UVC pro clear.

Pond Pump

This large filter requires a large pump to allow it to run efficiently, an Oase Aquamax eco 12000 professional was installed to do just that, it is rated up to 12000 litres an hour perfect for this filtration system. This pump has an extra intake option that when configured  allows water to be drawn from two parts of the pump therefore increasing the effectiveness of this unit. An Oase satellite strainer was connected up to the second intake hose to help remove large particles but not to suck up any unwanted animal life.

Waterfall Pump

The waterfall needed a standalone pump to run it as it would not be on all day unlike the filtration unit. The pump used to provide significant power at an impressive 4 metre height was an Oase neptune 9000 water feature pump. This quality pump would provide the power and reliability needed to run the waterfall. The pump has an inbuilt flow reducer to allow litres per hour to be controlled. The pump has a cage to protect wildlife living in the pond.

Pond lighting

Three small pond lights were installed to highlight the waterfall during the evening. Oase luna aqua were the lights used, quality halogen bulbs that are fully submersible.

Pond liner connection

Hose connectors were put through the liner so that no hoses would be seen out of the water, Oase Tradux are easy to install and provide a great way of hiding pond hose and electrical wires coming from the pond pumps.

  1. Press the Oase Tradux fitting against the liner (from behind the liner not from the pond)
  2. Mark the area on the liner that needs to be cut using chalk by running the chalk over the threaded part of the fitting that you have pushed up against the liner
  3. Using a sharp Stanley blade cut in the middle of the marked off section, put a block of wood behind the liner to reduce the chances of the liner tearing
  4. Use scissors to finish cutting out the hole
  5. Push the threaded part of the Oase Tradux fitting through the hole (from behind the liner not from the pond) be sure o ring is on
  6. Apply a large amount of pond sealant (Best is black sealant that can be used in water) to the inside of the liner (not behind) around the threaded connection that has been pushed through hole
  7. Thread on large connector and tighten, ensure sealant that has seeped out due to tightening is smoothed
